Nutrition and Dietetics

Tara Raftery graduated from Trinity College Dublin a first class Honours degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics. Upon graduation Tara was awarded the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI) Graduate Award for the maintaining the most consistently high academic record throughout the 4.5 year degree course and was also presented with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) Graduate Award for best Irish undergraduate thesis (within category).

Since graduation Tara has worked in a Dublin teaching hospital and has provided a Dietetic service to a variety of specialties including; Medicine for the Elderly, Orthopedics, Renal Transplant, Simultaneous Pancreas and Kidney Transplant, Acute and Chronic Kidney Disease, Heamodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, Rheumatology, Neurosurgery, Oncology, Haematology and Urology. Tara also provided out-patient clinics which covered an extensive range of nutrition related issues including; Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Weight Loss/Gain, Kidney Stones, Gout, Arthritis, Liver Disease, Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Colostomy and Ileostomy diets and nutritional support in Dementia. During her clinical work Tara also has published various pieces in scientific journals, presented her research at a number of European conferences and has worked freelance in industry.

In 2010 Tara was awarded a prestigious Government of Ireland Ph.D. scholarship from the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET). Tara is currently undertaking her Ph.D. through Trinity College Dublin and is conducting a clinical trial in the area of Crohn’s Disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease in the Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin.

The Nutrition and Dietetic Suite in The Leinster Clinic is fully equipped with medically approved equipment including Seca Scales, Seca Stadiometer and Holtain Skinfold Caliper.

Claiming on your Health Insurance

Dietitian’s consultation fees VHI, BUPA, Quinn Healthcare and Hibernian Aviva approved (provided they are a member of the INDI).
The extent of cover is dependent on the company and type of health insurance plan you have. You are best advised to contact your health care insurer to inform you of the extent of cover they provide to cover dietetic appointments. Fees may also be included in Med 1 form for tax relief Med 1 forms are available from your tax office or at www.revenue.ie
