(b) Written language deficits i.e. difficulties associated with reading, spelling, reading comprehension and written expression. Note: The speech, language and communication difficulties of children with voice, stuttering/stammering, general learning difficulties and autistic spectrum disorders fall outside the scope of this practise. Referral Patients may self refer or G.Ps and other professionals may also refer children. Parents/ professionals wishing to refer a child may do so by leaving a detailed message at our contact number. This referrer will then be contacted as soon as possible to discuss the referral in more detail (i.e. reasons for, and appropriateness of referral to this practise). Once the referral is appropriate, the child will be waitlisted for as assessment. Assessment The child should be accompanied by a parent who can observe the assessment. The assessment of the child’s articulation and/or language skills takes approximately one hour, (however this can vary according to the age and ability). The assessment of a child’s speech, language and written language skills takes approximately two hours. Preliminary feedback will be given after the assessment, which can be followed in due course by a detailed report, if requested. A treatment plan, if indicated, will be negotiated and agreed at the end of the session. Treatment A half to one hour session, weekly or fortnightly, will be offered at a mutually suitable time. A parent is expected to attend and observe or participate in the session (it is more effective therapeutically if the same parent attends all sessions). The course of therapy is dependent on the type and severity of the deficit.
